Tomorrow, Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) Executive Director Andrea Lowery and Senator Vincent Hughes, above, will host a press call to discuss the commission’s new social media campaign commemorating 400 years of African American history in North America.

In August 1619, the first enslaved Africans were brought to the English colonies at Point Comfort, Virginia. To commemorate this 400-year legacy and recognize the contributions made by these enslaved and later free people, PHMC will share highlights from the hundreds of state historical markers dedicated to African Americans. This campaign will spotlight the contributions made by African Americans to Pennsylvania’s rich and diverse heritage on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn using the hashtag #400yearsPA.

Each week between now and March 2020, PHMC will feature selected stories to highlight the multifaceted African American experience from across Pennsylvania. These historical accounts will include both well-known and lesser-known people, places and themes.
