“Senses of Freedom: Student Voices for Peace and Power”

The English Department and the Charles Evans Inniss Library of Medgar Evers College are very excited to have student poets and performers share their work, and the work of others who lend their voices to speak out on issues of social justice and police brutality, during the National Poetic Day of Action.

They will give a performance followed by a Q and A session for the audience.

Selected Medgar Evers College students will read from their own poems and from the works of protest by poets such as Amiri Baraka, Jayne Cortez, Sonia Sanchez, and many others and Abiodun Oyewole of the Last Poets will offer a special performance.

Professor Nina Mercer will introduce the event, and Dr. Carlyle Van Thompson will give closing remarks.

The performance is dedicated to the families of Eric Garner and Michael Brown and all victims of social inequalities. Medgar Evers College was founded on principles of social justice as embodied by Medgar Wiley Evers’ life, work and legacy.

The program is held in recognition of the Sundiata Acoli Freedom Campaign (SAFC)
