Exhibition Overview, September 7, 2018 – March 3, 2019.

The collaboration between the Center for Black Literature and the New-York Historical Society for the preview of “Black Citizenship in the Age of Jim Crow” is a natural alliance.

The mission of the Center for Black Literature is to broaden and enrich the public’s knowledge and aesthetic appreciation of the value of black literature and to serve as a voice, mecca, and resource for the study of the literature of people from the African Diaspora.

It is the only Center devoted to this in the country. The New-York Historical Society, one of America’s pre-eminent cultural institutions, is dedicated to fostering research, presenting history and art exhibitions, and public programs that reveal the dynamism of history and its influence on the world of today.

We are once again at a pivotal moment in the history of our nation and the visual documentation of how art and letters have been used to chronicle this troublesome period is a powerful reminder of what we have done in the name of what American citizenship for African Americans meant in the national context of the post-emancipation era that followed the Civil War.
