“Racism: FromThe Eyes Of A Child” by Mathew Knowles

Mathew Knowles “Racism: From the Eyes of a Child”

Mathew Knowles is a man of many talents. He is a businessman, talent manager, record label owner/producer, college professor and author. His first novel, “The DNA of achievers: 10 Traits of Highly Successful Professionals”, offered insight to the character of successful people in all walks of life.

His second book, “Racism: From the Eyes of a Child”, sheds much-needed light on the issues of racism and colorism and the need for the African-American community to shed the feelings of shame and face the experiences that haunt us into our adult lives.

This novel was written from Mathew’s prospective and derived from his own experiences as a young child growing up in Gadsden, Alabama during a time when African-Americans lacked money, power, respect as human beings and control over their lives.

He cites three reasons for writing this book. “I wrote this book for three reasons…1) Who we are is shaped by our family and upbringing. I encourage everyone to dig and find out as much as he/she can about their roots and family history. 2) We live in a world where racism still exists but has changed in many ways. 3) I feel it is my responsibility to bring awareness to people and start a dialogue which will lead to healing. Racism is an uncomfortable subject for most people. It’s not easy to talk about.”

Mathew urges us all to muster up the ‘social courage’ to speak out against racism, colorist, sexism and homophobia. “I have the ‘social courage’ to speak out against these issues and share my vulnerability. I have a platform to reach millions of people because of my position in the industry and I am using it to my advantage.”
He goes on to say, “It is no secret that worldwide, people of color have the worst jobs, the worst living conditions and receive the worst treatment from their governments. We must band together to fight against social injustice! Our ‘talk-to-do-ratio’ must increase tremendously. I admire the young people in Parkland, Florida who are speaking out against gun violence and trying to make a difference. Remember, Martin Luther King Jr. was only 27 years old when he marched on Washington. He led a whole movement that changed the world! Millennials should realize that they have the power to start a movement and possess the ‘social courage’ to effect change.”

“Racism: From the Eyes of a Child” is a must read! Through this novel, Mathew Knowles’ encourages us to confront subtle racist attitudes and use our voices to effect change. His intense recounts of childhood battles with racism and colorism are daunting. “We must stop internalizing our feelings, speak out and refuse to to let our African-American history be erased.”
