The Dance Theatre of Harlem will continue its monthly Open House Series on Sunday, April 11th at 3p.m. at the Everett Center for the Performing Arts, located at 466 West 152nd Street, between Amsterdam and St. Nicholas Avenues.

Tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for children 12 years old and under. The program will feature performances by award-winning performer Daniel Beaty, the Harlem String Quartet and the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble. Daniel Beaty will host the event.

The Harlem String Quartet, comprised of First Place Laureates of the Sphinx Competition, has a unique and challenging mission: to advance diversity in classical music while engaging young and new audiences through the discovery and presentation of varied repertoire, highlighting works by minority composers.

The Harlem Quartet made their acclaimed debut in the fall of 2006 at the Sphinx Organization’s Gala Concert at Carnegie Hall, earning rave reviews from The New York Times, as well as at the legendary Apollo Theatre in Harlem. In addition to being avid chamber musicians, each member of the Harlem Quartet is a seasoned solo artist, having appeared with the New York Philharmonic, the Atlanta, Cleveland, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Sinaloa de las Artes (Mexico) and Baltimore Symphonies and the Boston Pops, among others. They are co-managed by Sciolino Artist Management (SAM) of New York City and the Sphinx Organization.

Daniel Beaty is an award winning actor, singer, writer, and composer. His critically acclaimed solo play Emergency (formerly Emergence-SEE!) directed by Kenny Leon ran off-Broadway to a sold-out, extended run at The Public Theater in the fall of 2006. For this production, he received the 2007 Obie Award for Excellence in Off-Broadway Theater for Writing & Performing and the 2007 AUDELCO Award for Solo Performance. New York Magazine awarded him a 2007 Culture Award for Best in Theater. Daniel has toured Emergency nationally and internationally. As an actor, singer, and poet, Daniel has worked throughout the U.S., Europe, and Africa performing on television, acting in theatrical productions, singing leading roles in operas, and giving solo concerts of his own work.  He holds a BA with Honors in English & Music from Yale University and an MFA in Acting from the American Conservatory Theatre (ACT).

The 3:00 Performance will be followed by a reception with the artists. Refreshments served. Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, a 16 member company comprised of younger dancers trained in the DTH style is currently performing on its 2010 national tour.

In addition, signed copies of award winning author Marilyn Nelson’s “Beautiful Ballerina” will be available for sale after the performance. Beautiful Ballerina is a picture book Nelson created to celebrate the strength, courage and gracefulness of beginning ballerinas in her ode to the dancer and to the beauty of the Black woman. Four young ballerinas from the Dance Theatre of Harlem were photographed in movement by Susan Kuklin, revealing the beauty of ballet on every page. The gorgeous photographs and poetic prose invite children and all to celebrate the joy of dance.

The Open House Series has been a staple program of Dance Theatre of Harlem since its inception. Harlem Brewing Company and JTE Spirits are proud beverage sponsors of the Dance Theater of Harlem Open House Series.
