Where She’s From: Maryam Hassan was born and raised in England. “The most important thing I got from my parents was that there is so much to the world than what we see,” she tells The Black Star News. “My dad is from the tiny island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean so I was blessed to travel much of the world from a young age as my parents wanted their kids to have open minds and open hearts.”

“I have an amazing support system in my family though and knowing that I have unconditional love behind me inspires me to do anything I put my mind and heart to,” Maryam adds.

Where She’s At: Maryam, 21, attended the University of Sunderland in England and earned a bachelors degree in Journalism and politics. “I actually launched my career at the age of six,” she says, of modeling.

“I was a successful child model and appeared in countless TV shows, commercials and catalogues and I guess I just never stopped. I’m pretty much a veteran in this game. But I enjoy modeling; it’s the only work I’ve ever known.”

Maryam also enjoys the work she does for the foundation she launched www.mypace.com/thezanzibarcharity which allocates funds for women’s centers, schools and orphanages in Tanzania and Zanzibar. “I also aspire to become a political correspondent and flex my journalism skills,” she says.

Maryam is proud of the numerous campaigns she’s been a part of, including, a commercial in the Italian Alps last year for the Olympics and representing England as Miss Beautiful in Malta.

“A cute face and cute body will only get you so far; brains take you that extra mile,” Maryam advises other aspiring models. “My father always stressed to me the importance of both and using them the right way too.”

“I’m a brand junkie and particularly European,” she says, when asked to discuss how she prepares to step out. “I adore Prada purses because they are so classic. I only wear Dior Poison perfume, that’s my thing. And for my face I love Ling, Karin Herzog, Dr. Gross and Dermalogica for my skin. Clothes, I don’t have a favorite brand but my favorite stores are Intermix, Saks Fifth Ave and netaporter.”

This Aries’s favorite rides include the Mercedes McLaren and the Porsche Cayenne.
