Tamara’s High Ambitions
Tamara on her mom: “She showed me that no matter how bad things seem, they could always be worse.
Our Model Of The Day
Where She’s From: Tamara Gresham, a lovely Pisces, was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama.
“My parents divorced when I was very young and my mother worked hard to support my brother and I,” she tells The Black Star News. “Growing up witnessing her strength and determination has made me into the driven person that I am. She showed me that no matter how bad things seem, they could always be worse. Coming from the bottom there's no where to go but up.”
Tamara is in her Senior year at Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. “Ever since I was a little girl I always said I wanted to be an actress,” she continues. “I began doing community fashion shows when I was about seven or eight and I had my first theatre performance when I was in the 5th grade.”
Where She’s At: Tamara started pursuing her modeling and acting career in July 2005. “I plan on utilizing all of my talents; modeling, acting, writing to their fullest potential,” Tamara adds. “My goal is to feel satisfied and accomplished. I want to make a name for myself and my family. I want what everyone wants: success and happiness.”
Tamara concedes that it takes a lot of energy to balance school, work and her professional career. “Another challenge I face in the modeling industry is holding on to my values,” she adds. “I've missed many big paying gigs because I won't compromise my moral system. I want to be a positive role model for others and in order to do that there are certain jobs that I'm offered that I have to turn down.”
“It's important to not be naive in this world,” Tamara cautions. “You can be the most beautiful person in the universe, but if you're not educated in the least, you will be swindled, you will be used, you will be taken advantage of. It's that simple. Let's face it, there are a lot of scams out there that are aimed at naive people that harbor devastating or deadly consequences for the victims.”
So how does this young talented beauty prepare to step outside?
“If Mac Cosmetics and Victoria's Secret lotions and perfumes were drugs, I'd need rehab! I love the variety that both companies offer. I'm slowly becoming addicted to both BCBGirls and To the Max clothing. I've always loved BCBG shoes, but I've recently discovered the comfort of their jeans. My style is kind of weird and expressive of my moods. I love shoes and handbags, the Harajuku Lover's liner really fits my personality.”
Tamara’s Words Of Wisdom: “Don't be afraid to ask questions and don't be afraid to say no. Life is what you make it. Gift-work theory from Emile Zola ‘The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without the work.’”
Tamara’s Secrets Of Success: “Staying humble! Listening and taking heed to other's advice. No one person knows everything there is to know about anything.”
Tamara’s Favorite Three Movies: “Poetic Justice, The 5 heartbeats, Anywhere but Here.”
Tamara’s Favorite Three Books: “The Bible; Candide, by Voltaire; and, The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman.”
Three Leaders That Have Most Influenced Tamara: “Malcolm X, Huey Newton, and bell hooks.”
The First Three Things Tamara Would Do As President: “Propose tax increase on the top 5% of highest incomes; propose a tax cut for bottom 5% of incomes; and, decrease the interest rate on federal student loans—even more than the recent approval.”
Tamara’s Favorite Cars: “I love classic cars. Americana Muscle cars like the Mustang, Camaro, Charger to name a few. My all time favorite car is the 1962 Chevrolet Impala. I love everything about that car.”
Tamara’s Five Favorite Musicians And Their Songs: “Ne-yo, ‘say it,’; Beyonce, ‘Flaws and all,’; Whitney Houston, ‘I have nothing,’; Attitude, ‘Right Quick,’; and local MP, ‘throw'd off.’”
