ArtMattan Productions is proud to announce the New York theatrical release of “Gospel Hill” directed by Giancarlo Esposito Aug. 28, 2009 at Quad Cinema, 34 West 14th Street (The Village), New York, NY.

“Gospel Hill” will also screen in the context of the African Diaspora Summer Film Series between Aug. 21 and Aug. 30, 2009 at Riverside Theatre, 91 Claremont Ave (Morningside Heights), New York, NY.

Taking the film festival circuit by storm winning several awards at both international and domestic film festivals alike, Esposito’s directorial debut weaves throughout “Gospel Hill” themes of redemption, freedom and transcendence. Greed and idealism collide in this powerful narrative starring Danny Glover, Angela Bassett, Samuel L Jackson—unaccredited–Adam Baldwin, RZA, Nia Long, Julia Stiles and Giancarlo Esposito. Tensions of the past resurface, as a town and its people struggle with age-old issues of the politics of prejudice. Images of past and present blend seamlessly as reminders of lessons yet to be learned.

Some of the films that come to my mind are “Kirikou and the Sorceress,” “Honeydripper,” “The Tracker,” “Youssou N’Dour: Return to Gorée” and “Darrat/Dry Season,” just to name a few.  We are delighted to continue this tradition with “Gospel Hill,” a film that brings to the forefront very important issues in film and the American society.”

Diarah N’Daw-Spech, Co-Director of the African Diaspora Film Festival adds: “ADFF recently produced the Independent African American Film series in which the most popular title was “Medicine for Melancholy.”  “Medicine for Melancholy” and “Gospel Hill” are two recent films that demonstrate the vitality and imagination of contemporary independent African American filmmaking.  “Medicine for Melancholy” presents a very personal and intimate look at African American life that reflects a reality not often seen on the big screen.  “Gospel Hill” brings to the forefront an outlook with a stronger political resonance – namely the gains and losses of the Civil Rights movement – that is also important to see today. We are delighted to work in partnership with Giancarlo Esposito to give “Gospel Hill” the visibility it deserves.”

Press Screenings will take place at Riverside Theater, Aug. 21, 2009 at 7:30 p.m., reception at 6:30 p.m. To attend press screening, please RSVP at 212-678-7428 or [email protected].
