The Yoruba Cultural Institute, in partnership with MediAfritiQ will launch the Nollywood New York Film Series, presenting Nollywood At 20, a film screening event, panel discussion and celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the inception of Nollywood at the Studio Museum on October 12, 2013 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Amongst the three films screening will be the U.S. premiere of the award-winning film, Phone Swap, directed by one of Nigeria’s most celebrated filmmakers, Kunle Afolayan.

Panelists in attendance include veteran Nollywood screen diva, Stella Damasus; Iroko Partners business development officer, Oluchi Enuha; Shadow and Act’s
Tambay Obenson; NYU professor of Drama and Filmmaker Dr. Awam Amkpa and others.

The Nollywood New York Film Series will provide residents of the tri-State area regular opportunities to view high-quality indigenous language and English
Nollywood films in an environment that allows for networking and frank discourse on Nigerian cinema.

On a quarterly basis, pre-selected films of superior quality and content will be screened followed by Q&A with film directors, producers and/or lead actors; panel
discussions on the future of Nigerian cinema, networking and Nigerian cuisine.

The goals are: to generate increased awareness of world-class Nigerian films, indigenous language films and filmmakers, highlighting their use as tools of cultural education; generate among potential filmmakers a better understanding of the opportunities to make quality films for the Nollywood and Diaspora market; engender a renewed commitment to supporting African film industries with an increase in Diaspora spending; and, connect film industry professionals with quality content creators, and challenge filmmakers in the production of content that edify and enlighten viewers while painting a balanced and authentic picture of West Africa.

For over five years, YCI has provided Yoruba language and cultural instruction to diverse members of the Nigerian Diaspora, African Diaspora and international
community using film, music and other multimedia along with a standard language curriculum.
