Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, the most prolific songwriting team in Motown’s history, continue to thrill longtime fans with their electrifying performances. On Saturday, April 22nd at 8 pm, Kupferberg Center for the Arts, formerly Colden Center, and Queens Theatre in the Park proudly present this famous husband-and-wife duo starring in An Evening with Ashford & Simpson, a Bank of America Black Cultural Arts Special Event.

Composer and arranger Valerie Simpson and lyricist Nicholas Ashford met in 1964. Their irresistible upbeat songs, with incisive lyrics on love and social commentary, brought a new level of sophistication to soul music in the 1960s. The songwriting duo scored their first big hit in 1966 with Ray Charles’ recording of “Let’s Go Get Stoned.

After a period at Scepter Records, they moved to Motown where they wrote and/or produced all of the late 1960s duets for Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell including hits such as “Ain’t Nothing Like The Real Thing, “For Your Precious Love, and “You’re All I Need To Get By. During their years at Motown, the pair masterminded hits for The Four Tops, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Patti LaBelle, and others.

When they decided to record as a duo in 1973, their smooth joyous R & B sound garnered them a string of gold albums and solid hits including the “Don’t Cost You Nothing, “Is It Still Good To Ya? and “ It Seems To Hang On.

After thirty years of entertaining audiences with their unique brand of soul, Ashford and Simpson are still solid as a rock. For a night of great grooves, don’t miss An Evening with Ashford & Simpson on Saturday, April 22nd, 8 pm, at Colden Auditorium, Queens College.

Tickets for “AN EVENING WITH ASHFORD & SIMPSON are still available at $40 orchestra/$34 mezzanine; $2 discount for seniors and QTIP members. Orders may be placed by phone at 718-793-8080 or at the Kupferberg Center Box Office in Colden Auditorium.
