Common's At The Top
Common's music is known for its spiritual and social awareness content.
For the first time in his 14 year career, rapper Common reached the No. 1 spot in the Billboard 200.
His album Finding Forever sold 155,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. The album features appearances from Kanye West, Lily Allen, Bilal and D'Angelo, with West handling a majority of the production.
Common recently caused some controversy when he was accused of making bigoted statements during a concert at Emory University in 2006, when he rapped about his certainty that "damn niggers from Duke lacrosse" had raped a "Black princess," a reference to Crystal Gail Mangum who had accused three white Duke University lacrosse players of rape. The case ultimately was dismissed as prosecutors said Mangum’s story was filled with inconsistencies.
Common's music is known for its spiritual and social awareness content. The Chicago native has also starred in the latest Denzel Washington movie American Gangster which is due to be released this fall. Looks like Common's year is just beginning. Finding Forever hit the streets on July 31.
