Newark’s Revered Music Festival Returns for an 8th Year!
50,000 Expected to Return to the Lincoln Park Music Festival
for Four Days of Music, Dance, and Safe Family Fun in the
Lincoln Park Neighborhood of Newark, NJ:
July 25 – 28, 2013
Newark, New Jersey – Two days before the beginning of summer, the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District (LPCCD) announces the return of the highly revered Lincoln Park Music Festival. The event consistently attracts a growing number of attendees every year, and last year the numbers exceeded 40,000 people over what was then a three-day event. On the main stage, the Lincoln Park Music Festival (LPMF) features some of the best performers in the city and throughout the country, reflecting a variety of musical genres: Hip-Hop, House, Jazz and Gospel. A peek at this year’s confirmed performers’ roster reveals an eclectic mix of music tastes. Funk lovers will see Bernie Worrell Orchestra on the first day of the festival which will be held at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC), downtown Newark. NJPAC’s Sounds of the City and the Lincoln Park Music Festival are co-presenting this FunkFest event. Jazz lovers will be treated with a musical tribute to the legendary Wayne Shorter by Amiri Baraka’s NewArkestra, featuring an all-star line-up. For House music lovers, LPMF will welcome Terisa Griffin and Jihad Muhammad. For lovers of Gospel music, Will Brown & Another Level, and Jules Bartholomew featuring JudaCamp, will perform and for lovers of the golden era of Hip-Hop, Redman (Newark native), Lords of the Underground, and Black Thought of The Roots will be on deck.
In the park, and for all days of the festival, attendees can mix and mingle in the arts and crafts marketplace, enjoy food from scores of food vendors, and learn more about getting in shape – yoga, too – in the health and wellness pavilion.
For eight years, the multi-day event has been without safety incidents of any kind and has been a model of safe, family-friendly fun for the residents of Newark and a growing number of regional and national guests. The event will take place in Lincoln Park, located at 1035-1071 Broad Street, Newark, NJ 07102.
LPCCD founder and executive director BayeAdofo-Wilson reflects: “A project that initially started as a marketing strategy for creating awareness about the holistic community development work of the Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District has now become a project that not only celebrates this historic neighborhood of Newark, but also the musical richness of the City of Newark.” LPMF Executive Producer, Anthony Smith, adds: “As an idea to celebrate cultural diversity using the medium of music, the Festival has transformed this downtown neighborhood park into an annual three-day event that has rooted this historical arts district into being a major destination for tens of thousands.”
Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, Inc.(LPCCD) Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, Inc. (LPCCD) is a non-profit 501C (3) organization with a mission to plan, design, and build a comprehensive arts and cultural district in the Lincoln Park Coast area of the City of Newark, New Jersey. It is fulfilling its mission by creating a sustainable community with sustainable housing, cultural programming, urban agriculture, and green job creation. Specifically, the community is an 11-acre, four-block site that is being transformed into a “green” arts and cultural district that features mixed-income housing units, annual music festivals, and historic restoration projects.
LPCCD emerged out of meetings with local residents, civic leaders, business people and the city administration that were coordinated in the late 1990s by the Regional Plan Association. This process identified a desire to develop and pursue a vision for the neighborhood that would build upon its rich cultural heritage and open space. An intense period of urban planning and design was held in 1999 and gave more shape to this vision and ultimately lead to the independent establishment of LPCCD in 2002. LPCCD submitted a neighborhood plan to the City of Newark for creating a cultural district. This plan was converted into a redevelopment plan and approved by the Newark City Council and has guided the pursuit of a set of programming and redevelopment projects that are underway in the neighborhood today.
