The City Parks Foundation SummerStage Concert Series presents over 100 shows in all 5 NYC Boroughs throughout the Summer.

The best part? Almost every show is free and curated specifically for the neighborhood it’s presented in. Throughout August, can’t miss Latin shows featuring La India, Kali Uchis, Cuco, Eddie Palmieri, Lila Downs, La Sonora Ponceña and more will take place through New York.

Information about each show is below.

Lila Downs / Lido Pimiento / DJ Ripley

On Sunday, August 11th, Lila Downs will perform in Central Park. The Oaxaca-born singer-songwriter and actress has long been a champion of Mexico’s indigenous populations – for evidence, look no further than the video for her duet with Juanes “La Patria Modina,” which highlights the real-world after-effects of NAFTA and the US-Mexico drug war on indigenous Mexicans. While her early work was often jazzy, she quickly evolved into a folkloric style, and eventually would dabble in ranchera, bolero, blues, and soul, singing in indigenous languages such as Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl and Purépecha on her way to winning a Grammy (Pecados y Milagros, 2010) and three Latin Grammy awards. She’s joined by indigenous Colombian-Canadian musician, singer, and songwriter Lido Pimienta, who pairs traditional indigenous and afro-Colombian rhythms with next-gen synthesizers and electronic compositions. DJ Ripley, a Brooklyn/Philly-based border-busting DJ that celebrates people’s stories across race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality with global street bass sounds will join as well. This free show is set to take place from 7 to 10 PM. Doors open at 6 PM.

Eddie Palmieri / Baby Power / DJ Lucho / DJ Eddie Batiz

Also on Sunday, August 11th, legendary salsero Eddie Palmieri will perform in East River Park in Manhattan. After playing Carnegie Hall by age 11, the Puerto Rican Grammy Award-winning pianist, bandleader, musician, and composer founded the bands La Perfecta and the Afro-Cuban supergroup Harlem River Drive, helping shift the sounds of salsa, incorporating more trombones and flute for a new “trombanga” style. He is joined by Baby Power, DJ Lucho, and DJ Eddie Batiz. This free show is set to take place from 6 to 10 PM.

Selena for Sanctuary: Kali Uchis / Cuco / Ambar Lucid / Helado Negro / IV Jay / Jasper Bones / Principe Q / Santuario House Band with Music Direction by Adrian Quesada

On Sunday, August 18th, a free Selena-themed outdoor concert, Selena for Sanctuary, will take place in Central Park. The concert, hosted in support of immigration rights, was born of a series of benefit concerts in 2017 put together by artist manager and activist Doris Muñoz. This year’s party is headlined by Kali Uchis, a Colombian-American singer with a critically acclaimed debut LP (2018’s Isolation) and collaborations with Gorillaz, Juanes and Daniel Caesar. She’s supported by Cuco, an ascendant Chicano bedroom pop star who is set to drop his debut album with Interscope after a prolonged bidding war; Ambar Lucid, an 18-year-old Dominican and Mexican-American singer-songwriter from New Jersey who writes bilingual tunes and wields finger-picked guitars and spaced out electronics with equal aplomb; Helado Negro, a Brooklyn-based descendant of Ecuadorian immigrants who is known for his personal and political avant-pop music; IV Jay, an R&B Latin prodigy who was recently signed to Atlantic Records; Jasper Bones, an up and coming Latinx artist; Principe Q, a DJ and producer who spins R&B, hip-hop, dancehall, kuduro, and dembow; and the Santuario House Band, led by music director Adrian Quesada. This free show is set to take place from 8 to 10 PM. Doors open at 7 PM.

La Sonora Ponceña / Jose ‘El Canario’ Alberto / DJ Lucho

Also on Sunday, August 18th, La Sonora Ponceña, one of New York’s longest-running salsa bands, will perform at SummerStage at Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island. Formed in Ponce, Puerto Rico in 1954 by Enrique Lucca Caraballo and Antonio Santaella, the group has recorded 32 albums and is still going strong, now directed by Caraballo’s son Papo Lucca. The band is joined by Jose “El Canario” Alberto, the Dominican salsa vocalist who moved from Santo Domingo to Puerto Rico as a young boy and got his name (“The Canary”) on account of his virtuosic whistling ability. Alberto moved to New York in 1977 and got his break with Tipica ’73, going on to start his own band and collaborate with the likes of Sonny Bravo, Mario Rivera, and Leopoldo Pineda. They’re both supported by the Bronx’s DJ Lucho, a mentee of freestyle legend “Little” Louie Vega. This free show is set to take place from 6 to 9 PM. Doors open at 5 PM.

La India / Cimafunk / Soni Withaneye / DJ Lucho

On Sunday, August 25th, La India will perform at SummerStage in Central Park. Famously “introduced” by Eddie Palimieri in “Llegó La India via Eddie Palmieri,” Linda Viera Caballero quickly made a name for herself as La India, one of the biggest voices in salsa. But before Celia Cruz would dub her the “Princess of Salsa,” she got her start in the South Bronx, where she was a founding member of the Latin Freestyle group TKA, and cut a solo record with Freestyle legends John “Jellybean” Benitez and her husband “Little” Louie Vega. After “Llegó La India via Eddie Palmieri,” she blossomed into salsa royalty and never looked back, going on to work with Cruz and Tito Puente, and winning Best Salsa Album Latin Grammy for her album Intensamente India Con Canciones De Juan Gabriel. She will be joined by Cuban funk dance artist Cimafunk named by Billboard as one of “10 Latin Artists to watch in 2019.” Soni Withaneye and DJ Lucho will also perform. This free show is set to take place from 7 to 10 PM. Doors open at 6 PM.
