MADE IN CONGO set to premiere on Broadway at United Solo Festival this Wednesday at 7.30pm.

An epic journey into the heart of Africa! Canadian hit play MADE IN CONGO will have its US premiere as part of the United Solo Theatre Festival this Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Theatre Row on Broadway.

Irresistibly funny, beautifully moving and boldly colorful, MADE IN CONGO is a one-woman play written and performed by Sabrina Moella and dramaturged and directed by Dian Marie Bridge. Told in English and infused with French and Lingala, the play presents 3 generations of Congolese women from one family: daughter Bina, mother Mulongi, and grandmother Coco… The women have gathered one night to await the birth of a new baby girl.

Congo has been described as one of the worst places on Earth to be born a woman, but Bina, Mulongi and Coco think differently. Wanting to prepare the baby for a brighter future, they provide her with words of wisdom, stories of hope and songs of triumph during the delivery process.

In this tour-de-force performance, Sabrina Moella uses old memories, dances and songs from the Democratic Republic of Congo to celebrate Congolese women’s remarkable strength and resilience.  Despite the everyday challenges that all of them are confronted with, the women are still trying their best to keep traditions alive, learning and transmitting their knowledge about Congolese womanhood from mothers to daughters. Based on the playwright’s true family events, MADE IN CONGO
provides a unique and feminist insight into Congolese’s past and recent history.

MADE IN CONGO has had two sold-out presentations in Toronto (Canada): in May 2013 during the annual rock.paper.sistahz festival and in September 2013 during the inaugural Piece of Mine Theater Festival.

Now playwright Sabrina Moella and director Dian Marie Bridge are excited to bring this play to New York for its US premiere as part of the United Solo Festival on November 5, 2014, 7.30pm at Theatre Row on Broadway.
