After all of the controversy surrounding the lack of black faces amongst the nominees for the 2016 Academy Awards, it’s been interesting to see whether any of these issues would be affecting the TV and movie schedules this spring.

We’re supposedly seeing a ‘golden age’ of television with many networks stepping up their game in regards to the quality and variety of programming, and with a range of new shows celebrating the underground music scene and life around a roulette table, it’s going to be interesting to see how things progress. One of the biggest TV treats this spring is undoubtedly HBO’s acclaimed series Vinyl. Created by Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, it’s managed to deliver a gritty take on the nascent 1970s rock and roll scene in New York. Of particular interest is the great performance by Ato Essandoh who delivers a compelling vision of a talented artist caught up in the unsavoury mechanisms of the music industry.

Another great actor who’s returned to our screens this spring is the Zimbabwean-American star Danai Gurira who reprises her role as the fiery Michonne in the sixth season of the acclaimed horror series The Walking Dead. And with the news that Danai Gurira could soon be playing the role of Afeni Shakur in the upcoming Tupac biopic, it seems that her star is definitely in the ascendancy.

It’s also been noticeable that omnipresent superheroes on our screens are showing a little more diversity in recent times. The Netflix series Daredevil made the great decision to have Vondie Curtis-Hall starring as the ace reporter Ben Urich, and it remains to be seen whether this will be the start of a trend.

One of the most publicized new TV series this spring is Stan Lee’s Lucky Man that follows the fate of a policeman who receives a mysterious amulet that gives him the power to win at the casino. With online casino sites such as Lucky Nugget Casino gaining a much greater presence across the internet, it’s only natural that many movies and TV shows like this showing themselves to be inspired by casino culture, and you could try the online table games at the gaming site via a smartphone and get a glimpse into the fascinating games of roulette, poker and blackjack that have become such an essential part of 21st century entertainment.

Away from the gaming tables, surely one of the most recognisably black comic-book superheroes, Storm, makes her reappearance when X-Men: Apocalypse comes to our cinema screens in May. Of particular interest will be the fact that this will be the first time that Alexandra Shipp takes on the role of Storm since Halle Berry left the series.

And with plenty of other treats emerging from our TV screens, cinema multiplexes and even online roulette games, it looks to be another great season of entertainment.
