ACHEBE, Author of Things Fall Apart, Dies At 82

CHINUA ACHEBE, the father of OKONKWO, one of the greatest characters created in literature, has died.

Although Achebe wrote several books he will forever be remembered as the author of “Things Fall Apart” which was his first book published in 1958. It went on to become a classic and is now found in bookstores and universities all over the world.

Achebe was 82 and died this morning following an illness and hospital stay in Boston, according to media accounts based on confirmations from his agent and his publisher.

“Chinua Achebe is the greatest of African writers and we are all desolate to hear of his death,” Simon Winder, publishing director at Penguin, said.

Achebe’s family in a statement called him one of the “great literary voices of all time” and also said: “He was also a beloved husband, father, uncle and grandfather, whose wisdom and courage are an inspiration to all who knew him.”

Things Fall Apart has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and it’s been translated into more than 50 languages
