Africa is one of the most resource-rich continents in the world, but that wealth is undercut by disintegrating economic systems and the “looting machine” of international resource trade.

One upside of Africa’s economic turmoil is the radical analyses that emerge. These five books examine the African economy and its likely influence on global financial structures.

Chika Onyeani, the author of “Capitalist Nigger,” returns with “Roar of the African Lion.”:

“I have been accused of being angry – if you know what is going on within the black race, I ask you, why wouldn’t you be angry?” The African Lion, Dr. Chika Onyeani, is back. The author of the phenomenally successful Capitalist Nigger offers a new collection of his speeches, articles and writings over the past 15 years.

He outlines his revolutionary Spider Web Doctrine – aimed at financial self-reliance and the upliftment of black communities – and attacks the parasitic leaders whose greed has robbed the people of Africa of opportunities for advancemand and development, since their liberation.

The perils of printing money examined in Philip Haslam and Russell Lamberti’s “When Money Destroys Nations” tells the gripping story of the disintegration of the once-thriving Zimbabwean economy. Analysing this case within a global context, the authors investigate the causes of hypeinflation and draw continous parallels between Zimbabwe and the world’s developed economies.

Morten Jerven examines misleading African development statistics in “Poor Numbers: How We Are Misled by African Development Statistics.” Existing data on income and growth in sub-Saharan African countries are unreliable even seriously misleading. Morten Jerven provides the first systematic analysis of the level, direction and causes of the errors, looking at a range of African countries, from Benin to Zambia, and SA.

Martin Meredith unpacks Africa’s natural resources in his latest book, “Fortunes of Africa.” Ever since the era of the Pharaohs, Africa has been coveted for its riches.
Now the lure of Africa’s riches remains as strong as ever. New players have entered the field. The rising economic might of China has stimulated a boom in demand for Africa’s oil and mineral resources. To secure food supplies, land has become a prized commodity once more.

“The Looting Machine: Warlords, Tycoons, Smugglers and the Systematic Theft of Africa’s Wealth” by Tom Burgis. An investigative journey into the ways the resource trade wreaks havoc on Africa. The Looting Machine sheds light on the shadowy networks that connect Goldman Sachs, BP, the Hong Kong underworld and the murderous cabals that rule some oil states.
