Despite the many challenges, such as postponements and protests, Nigerians once again exhibited their strong dedication to electoral and democratic processes and I applaud them for that.

Delays and violence marred the weeks and months leading to yesterday’s election. I would like to express condolences to the families of the people killed in election-related violence. Meanwhile, the last-minute postponement of the election by the Independent National Election Commission (INEC) led to significant challenges for voters. Delays of this type, especially in contentious elections, generally undermine public confidence in the electoral process and the results of the election.

I understand that the opposition party is refusing to accept yesterday’s outcome. I urge all parties to seek to resolve any disputes over results peacefully, including through the courts if necessary. Violence should not be an option.

Nigeria has achieved significant democratic gains over the past two decades and I look forward to observing their continued progress in election management over the years to come.

Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), chair of the U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa.
