Friends of the Congo collaborates with Bob and Rita Marley’s eldest granddaughter, Donisha Prendergast to Break the Silence around the tragedy in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The collaboration includes organizing the ongoing events both in the United States and Jamaica during Congo Week VI, October 20 – 26.

One event, “From Faith to Humanity” will be done in concert with Fordham University GSS on Thursday, October 24th at 7 PM in New York City. Donisha will screen her film “Rasta A Soul’s Journey.”

A discussion will follow the screening featuring Maurice Carney Executive Director of Friends of the Congo, Jade De Saussure of Fordham University and Donisha Prendergast.

The second event will take place on Sunday, October 27th in Kingston, Jamaica. Donisha will collaborate with Gabre Selassie at the Dub Club to host a special evening of music and information to support peace and justice in the Congo.

“Rastafari and Reggae Music have always used their voices to raise awareness for and about Africa. It is my hope that through these moments of sharing, we can network and learn more about the Congo, develop ideas and initiatives that will tell the children the truth,” Donisha says.

In addition to the Congo Week activities, a follow-up is also envisioned in February 2014.

Donisha and her supporters will organize the “Africa Unite” Celebrations in Kingston, Jamaica where Congolese films will be screened as a part of the celebration and the Jamaican youth will engage in teach-ins about the situation in the Congo.

“I’m encouraged to see Donisha in particular and Jamaicans in general join the global movement for peace, justice and human dignity in the heart of Africa,” says Carney.
