Uganda’s Minister of Internal Affairs and former Army Commander Gen. Aronda Nyakairima died while on his way back to Uganda from South Korea. He was on a plane that was heading to Dubai, his transit point.

The cause of death has not been confirmed but a government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo tweeted that it was from a heart attack.

Uganda’s Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda in a statement announced that pathologists were heading to Dubai to examine and also retrieve the body.

Rugunda also announced that the country’s defense minister Crispus Kiyonga would chair a committee to coordinate all affairs related to Nyakairima’s death.

Nyakairima, who was 56, earlier this year while coordinating what the government said was an exercise to demarcate land in Amuru in the northern part of Uganda was stunned when elderly women in the Acholi region threw off their clothing and rolled on the ground naked in protest. The people of Amuru believe the government has a plan to steal their land on behalf of Ugandan-based and foreign investors.

In 2013, after Uganda’s former Coordinator of Intelligence Services Gen. David Sejusa fled to London he claimed that he in addition to Nyakairima and Amama Mbabazi, Uganda’s former prime minister who is now a presidential aspirant in next year’s elections were on a list of people to be eliminated. Sejusa, who has since returned to Uganda, alleged it was because of their opposition to the so-called Mohoozi Project, an alleged scheme to groom President Yoweri Museveni’s son Muhoozi Kaenaregaba to succeed him.
