OAS COMMISSION APPROVED TO SEEK PEACEFUL SOLUTION TO POLITICAL CRISIS IN NICARAGUA

Newly approved Commission to Nicaragua has announced their intent to engage in “diplomatic efforts at the highest level to seek a peaceful and effective solution to the political and social crisis in Nicaragua.”

Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s government has been embroiled in violent political turmoil since 2018.

The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) yesterday approved a Resolution on the Appointment of a Commission on Nicaragua, in compliance with the mandate of the General Assembly of the Organization.

The Commission will carry out “diplomatic efforts at the highest level to seek a peaceful and effective solution to the political and social crisis in Nicaragua,” and will submit a report to the Permanent Council within a maximum of 75 days.

This Commission will be comprised of the following members:

* Ambassador Leopoldo Francisco Sahores, Undersecretary for Issues of the Americas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship of the Argentine Republic * * * Ambassador Elisa Ruiz Diaz Bareiro, Permanent Representative of Paraguay to the Organization of American States

* A representative from Canada

* A representative from Jamaica

* Ambassador Carlos Trujillo, Permanent Representative of the United States to the Organization of American States

The resolution was approved with 21 votes in favor (Argentina, The Bahamas, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, United States, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Saint Lucia, Uruguay and Venezuela), 3 votes against (Nicaragua, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Suriname), 8 abstentions (Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Dominica, Guatemala, Mexico, and Trinidad and Tobago) and 2 countries absent (Grenada and St. Kitts and Nevis).
