Tsiko won the award for his in-depth and well-researched article on the need to promote African languages on the Internet

Black Star News Southern Africa correspondent Sifelani Tsiko was recently crowned Information, Communication and Technology Reporter of the Year at the 2006 National Journalistic and Media Awards.

Tsiko won the award for his in-depth and well-researched article on the need to promote African languages on the Internet as a strategy of preserving them from becoming extinct.

"African languages are often regarded as inferior and I am glad Tsiko you have managed to raise an important issue which needs to be taken seriously in the wake of the dominance and the globalizing influence of the English language," one of the judges said.

He was singled out as the only journalist who has managed to consistently write on science and technology issues which most scribes shied away from.

In February this year, Tsiko was named winner of the prestigious RTG/Environment Africa Environmental Reporter of the Year 2006 award. The NJAMA awards were organized by the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ).

Tsiko is a winner of numerous other awards. There were 39 categories and over 427 entries from the print media alone. Others were from the electronic media.

Competition was stiff and the judges said the quality of entries submitted was very high.
Judges were made up of media lecturers from the University of Zimbabwe, National University of Science and Technology and Midlands State University and three other veteran journalists.

Tsiko is a veteran scribe based in Zimbabwe who regularly writes for the Black Star News on a range of issues.
