Dr. Van Sertima Taught Us To Always Question

[Letter To The Editor]

As a historian I owe a great debt to Dr. Van Sertima.

In pushing against traditional narratives he expanded the methodological and theoretical approaches ofinvestigating the past.

While the conclusions of much of his work caused much debate in scholarly communities and in the general public, there is no denying that Dr. Ivan Van Sertima demonstrated how socially rather than scientifically history has been constructed.

His views were expansive and inclusive — not narrow and culture specific — he taught us to consider that evidence needs to be explored and questioned and not just swallowed because it is what we have always been told.

Though most historians are closed to his ideas and methods he paved the way for a better understanding and a better history.
