An aide to the brother of Uganda’s president has been arrested in
London on suspicion of trafficking cocaine, reports Uganda’s leading
independent newspaper Daily Monitor.

The aide, who works for General Salim Saleh, brother of the president,
Gen. Yoweri K. Museveni, was arrested at Heathrow airport. The Ugandan
newspaper in its June 10 story doesn’t report the arrest date or the
exact charges. The Ugandan aide, Rose Birungi, was detected by sniffer
dogs, the newspaper reported.

“The cocaine was properly packed but sniffer dogs smelt it,” an airport
source is quoted saying in the report. Birungi could face 14 years
imprisonment, reported the newspaper.

The Monitor wasn’t able to reach Gen. Saleh. The newspaper quoted an
aide to the general saying, of Saleh: “He is in a bad mood now. It’s
not advisable for you to talk to him about that.”

The Monitor says officials at Uganda’s High Commission in London
referred calls to the British High Commission in Kampala for a comment.

The report of the arrest and alleged drug trafficking comes as another
blow to President Museveni’s brother; Gen. Saleh who is a minister
for micro-financing, was named in a 2001 UN report about senior Uganda
officials who plundered and smuggled resources from the DR Congo during Uganda’s
occupation of Eastern Congo.
