Kenya Opposes Uganda Peace Delays

Kenya: “We will not support anything that delays the talks. The people of Northern Uganda have suffered for a long time. The earlier the talks are concluded the better so that people in internally displaced people’s camps return to their villages.â€?

Kenyan authorities advised the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels to continue with the peace talks in Juba, South
Sudan and drop demands that the talks be transferred to Nairobi.

Kenya’s Deputy parliament speaker, Samuel Poghisio  told journalists today in Nairobi that the current demands by LRA to change the venue is a tactic aimed at stalling.

We do not support LRA ‘s demands that the venue should be changed,â€? he said. “That will delay the signing of the peace agreement. We will not support anything that delays the talks. The people of Northern Uganda have suffered for a long time. The earlier the talks are concluded the better so that people in internally displaced people’s camps return to their villages.â€?

The rebels last week announced at a press conference in Nairobi that they want the venue shifted because Sudanese President Omar Bashir had said that he did not want them on his territory. Poghisio also advised Uganda to include the African Union in the peace talks. He said that the Inter Governmental Authority Development( IGAD) should also be utilized where necessary.
