Clinton’s Pastor Isn’t A Pedophile (The Crime Occurred In A Town Called Clinton)

The lesson here is that perhaps in the future editors at The Observer-Dispatch, and other newspaper for that matter, should pay closer attention----We now live in an environment of “gotcha politics, which, unfortunately Senator Clinton herself also prefers; and “gotcha journalism, which is in vogue, as George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson proved when they moderated the ABC-sponsored presidential candidates’ debate last week.

[Elections 2008 Comment: How False Stories Originate And Morph]

There is a rumor circulating on the Internet that presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton’s “former pastor” is a pedophile who was recently sentenced to prison for improperly touching a seven year old girl.

It’s a false story. At least with respect to this particular pastor in question; he has no connection to the Clintons.

It’s one of those “stories” that could only be generated in the modern dot.net era with the proliferation of “news” sites and blogs.

Ironically, it also highlights the unfairness of the manner in which inaccurate depictions can start online and take a life of its own: Witness how Senator Barack Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, a complex man and a former U.S. marine who dedicated 30 years of his life working with the poor in Chicago, was reduced into an ugly caricature after a snippet of a videotape of the minister making intemperate remarks was played over and over on Youtube.

Maybe senator Clinton will now have a little sympathy not only for Rev. Wright, but for Senator Obama’s dilemma: having to defend the extremely partial and unbalanced depiction of his former pastor.

The Clinton "story" is false. It’s based on a total misreading of an actual news story. Due to one misplaced word, the original story morphed into something else.

The original story covered the sentencing of a pastor in the town of Clinton, New York. The pastor was sentenced to three years imprisonment for inappropriately touching a seven year old girl. The reference to the town of Clinton, in one news account, in a Utica newspaper called The Observer-Dispatch, clearly confused some overly-eager bloggers who then quickly took matters into their own hands and spread their own false accounts.

On February 29, The Observer-Dispatch had reported on it’s website that the “former Clinton pastor was sentenced Friday to three years in prison for inappropriately touching a 7-year-old girl at his home last March…”

The article was referring to the town of Clinton, not Senator Hillary Clinton.

Apparently, Rev. Procanick, had for years denied that he had committed the sexual abuse and even falsely testified about his innocence while on the witness stand, provoking the judge’s anger at his sentencing, which was also reported in the Observer-Dispatch article.

“As a minister of God, you got on the stand and you lied,” the judge on the case, Michael L. Dwyer, is quoted as saying in the Observer-Dispatch article.

The Observer-Dispatch article went on, referring to the 54-year old pastor, whose church is given as the Resurrection Assembly of God church: “A jury found Procanick guilty Jan. 22 of first-degree sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a child. Dwyer said he believes Procanick was being honest when he told the girl's mother in a recorded phone call that he was wrong to caress the girl's body while she was trying to fall asleep. However, Procanick instead testified in court that he did nothing wrong other than spend time alone with the girl, who was a friend of the family, Dwyer noted.”

The article went on to report that the judge told the disgraced pastor that had he not lied, he might have avoided jail time, or he might have been handed a lesser sentence.

By the time the story appeared on some blogs, the town of Clinton had somehow morphed into presidential candidate Clinton. The false story appears on a number of sites where readers, unaware it's an erroneous report, have been posting messages denouncing Senator Clinton for criticizing Senator Obama's ties to Rev. Wright while failing to denounce "her own pastor."

One website, www.thelifefiles.com on March 31, used the same picture used in the original Observer-Dispatch article (the same photo is used in this Black Star News article), showing the pastor seated on the left.

Lifefiles ran the picture with the following caption:Former Clinton Pastor GUILTY Of Sexual Abuse!

Was life files.com also referring to the town of Clinton?

Evidently not, because the photo caption read: “Weeks after criticizing Barack Obama’s Rev. Jeremiah Wright it appears Hillary Clinton has her own ‘religous issues’ after her former pastor Rev. William Procanick (pictured above left) was sentenced last month for sexually assaulting a 7 year old girl. The pastor was sentenced to 3 years in jail - much shorter than the maximum sentence he was facing.”

Readers were then prompted to “READ MORE…”

Many of the 29 readers that posted comments to lifefiles.com’s erroneous story

don’t seem to have followed the suggestion to “read more.” Had they clicked on the link it would have taken them to www.uticaod.com, the website for The Observer-Dispatch, where the original article appears. A careful reading would have made it clear that the Observer-Dispatch wasn’t referring to the New York senator.

The lesson here is that perhaps in the future editors at The Observer-Dispatch, and other newspaper for that matter, should pay closer attention----We now live in an environment of “gotcha” politics, which, unfortunately Senator Clinton herself also prefers; and “gotcha” journalism, which is in vogue, as George Stephanopoulos and Charlie Gibson proved when they moderated the ABC-sponsored presidential candidates’ debate last week.

According to it’s website, thelifefile.com combines content you would expect to find in magazines, news papers, periodicals, reality television and some exclusive things you would never find at all - becoming the premiere choice to find out what is hot and current in culture across all genres.” It describes itself also as “the first comprehensive online experience for those who want to know about pop culture and those who mold it.”

Below are the comments posted to the story that still appear on www.lifeline.com:

Many posters, believing the aticle to be true, said Clinton was getting her just dues, based on the way she handled the Rev. Wright issue. One writer who said he’s an Obama supporter demanded for more evidence, adding that he or she believed in fairness. One reader actually did warn that the original article referred to the town of Clinton, New York. One reader said he or she had referred the article to Bill O’Reilly and was waiting to see if he would use it.

Most however, preferred “gotcha!”

Okay let me help you all out..

1st. Despite of what the title of this says…Hillary Didn’t accuse his pastor of anything…this was not Hillary’s doing. It was Fox News anchor Sean Hannity who broke this story.

2nd. The reason the Media covered Obama’s story so intensly is because, Obama sat there for 20 years and listened to his Pastor slandor America. Once he was asked about it he lied and said he never heard any of his remarks…then quickly came back and said he did hear them. His judgement is in question here..

So I’m sure if Hillary sat under her pastor after knowing he was a pedophile, then this story would be all over the news as well.

PLEASE…It’s time to ‘Get Real’ stop being so BIAS. If you like Barrak, then fine..everyone is entitled to His/Her own oppinion. But dont sound so ignorent.

Ignorent huh? You’ve been all over this website spewing that Hillary bull! The only person here who seems to be ignorAnt of the issues is you!

1. Hillary may not have accused Rev. Wright of anything, but even the most pig-headed of Clinton supporters won’t deny that she’s been using the issue in attempts to gain superdelagates. And then again to get her own a** out of hot water when she lied about the Bosnia visit.

2. Not a SINGLE opponent of Obama’s has been able to say that Rev. Wright was telling lies from his pullpit! The man may have been offensive, but every word that came out of his mouth was true. Proove its not…I dare you…

3. Hillary’s judgement is SERIOUSLY in question when she’s lied about the Bosnia issue, continued to lie about her accomplishments in Health Care Reform, and even flip-flopped on NAFTA.

To top all that off, she’s run one of the most shamelessly devisive campaigns in recent history and is throwing John McCain more votes every second she stays in this losing battle.

Get your facts straight Kidd

Thanks Dom, you just proved my point.

Were talkin about the article at hand. And NO this dead news wont go anywhere. Obbie has to deal with the pastor issue alone, just like Hillary had to deal with her vote on the war.

Nope that pastors remarks were far from true. They were his opinion. Not fact.
So bring me FACTS the the American government had injected Blacks with H.I.V., and once you bring me the facts i’ll agree with you and him.

Ooh yea I agree with you the Bosnia visit was a dumb move. It made her look real dumb. But Obbie has told a tall tale or two as well..so i guess there both guilty of that.

If you follow the papers, you’d know that many polls proove alot of black people in America believe that the govt is responsible for H.I.V. And even if that cant be proven, it can not be disputed that the Regan administration did nothing to stop the spread of the disease in the early eighties. It was a “gay” disease and then a black disease, and the govt didnt give a damn about either group. Maybe they didnt physically give H.I.V. to blacks, but they sure didnt stop it. To this day, its still one of the top killers in black communities across the country.

Furthermore, black people have justification for believeing this, just look up the Tuskeegee Experiments where the US Govt injected black men with syphillis to see what it would do to their bodies. Doesn’t seem so far fetched after all huh?

And the Rev. was Wright on more than one point, including the two most prominent and (supposedly) offensive aspects of his diatribe: Hillary doesn’t know what its like to live in a single parent home as a black man, and the 9/11 attacks were a direct result of America’s failed foreign policy. That’s not opinion, that is fact, go do some research as to who shipped guns to Afghanistan in the first place, and provided the training for militias Pre-Gulf War.

Also, Im glad you understand that Hill’s told some lies, and yes Obama has told some too. No one is perfect, least of all politicians. But the difference between the two of them is that one will need your vote in November, and he’ll be a great President… ; )

Oh and i also dont appreciate how she and bill try to act as if the smaller states were so insignificant yet they were camapaigning at each, is it just sour grapes cuz she lost. u cant downplay any states be it small or large becuz they still each have delegates that u need to win the nomination, and that is why hilary my friend is in a difficult situation now, see what happens when u try to overlook the smaller states! she has no integrity to me anymore, she is just doing and saying anything just to get a vote! Now lets see if CNN blasts this all over there networksjust as they did the Obama hoopla!!!!!!!!!

Hillary’s Nasty Pastorate
by Barbara Ehrenreich
There’s a reason Hillary Clinton has remained relatively silent during the flap over intemperate remarks by Barack Obama’s former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. When it comes to unsavory religious affiliations, she’s a lot more vulnerable than Obama.

You can find all about it in a widely under-read article in the September 2007 issue of Mother Jones, in which Kathryn Joyce and Jeff Sharlet reported that “through all of her years in Washington, Clinton has been an active participant in conservative Bible study and prayer circles that are part of a secretive Capitol Hill group known as “The “Fellowship,” also known as The Family. But it won’t be a secret much longer. Jeff Sharlet’s shocking exposé The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power will be published in May.

Sean Hannity has called Obama’s church a “cult,” but that term applies far more aptly to Clinton’s “Family,” which is organized into “cells”–their term–and operates sex-segregated group homes for young people in northern Virginia. In 2002, Sharlet joined The Family’s home for young men, forswearing sex, drugs and alcohol, and participating in endless discussions of Jesus and power. He wasn’t undercover; he used his own name and admitted to being a writer. But he wasn’t completely out of danger either. When he went outdoors one night to make a cell phone call, he was followed. He still gets calls from Family associates asking him to meet them in diners–alone.

The Family’s most visible activity is its blandly innocuous National Prayer Breakfast, held every February in Washington. But almost all its real work goes on behind the scenes–knitting together international networks of right-wing leaders, most of them ostensibly Christian. In the 1940s, The Family reached out to former and not-so-former Nazis, and its fascination with that exemplary leader, Adolf Hitler, has continued, along with ties to a whole bestiary of murderous thugs. As Sharlet reported in Harper’s in 2003:

During the 1960s the Family forged relationships between the U.S. government and some of the most anti-Communist (and dictatorial) elements within Africa’s postcolonial leadership. The Brazilian dictator General Costa e Silva, with Family support, was overseeing regular fellowship groups for Latin American leaders, while, in Indonesia, General Suharto (whose tally of several hundred thousand “Communists” killed marks him as one of the century’s most murderous dictators) was presiding over a group of fifty Indonesian legislators. During the Reagan Administration the Family helped build friendships between the U.S. government and men such as Salvadoran general Carlos Eugenios Vides Casanova, convicted by a Florida jury of the torture of thousands, and Honduran general Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, himself an evangelical minister, who was linked to both the CIA and death squads before his own demise.

At the heart of The Family’s American branch is a collection of powerful right-wing politicos, who include, or have included, Sam Brownback, Ed Meese, John Ashcroft, James Inhofe and Rick Santorum. They get to use The Family’s spacious estate on the Potomac, The Cedars, which is maintained by young men in Family group homes and where meals are served by The Family’s young women’s group. And, at The Family’s frequent prayer gatherings, they get powerful jolts of spiritual refreshment, tailored to the already powerful.

Clinton fell in with The Family in 1993, when she joined a Bible study group composed of wives of conservative leaders like Jack Kemp and James Baker. When she ascended to the Senate, she was promoted to what Sharlet calls the Family’s “most elite cell,” the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast, which included, until his downfall, Virginia’s notoriously racist Senator George Allen. This has not been a casual connection for Clinton. She has written of Doug Coe, The Family’s publicity-averse leader, that he is “a unique presence in Washington: a genuinely loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God.”

Furthermore, The Family takes credit for some of Clinton’s rightward legislative tendencies, including her support for a law guaranteeing “religious freedom” in the workplace, such as for pharmacists who refuse to fill birth control pre scri ptions and police officers who refuse to guard abortion clinics.

What drew Clinton into the sinister heart of the international right? Maybe it was just a phase in her tormented search for identity, marked by ever-changing hairstyles and names: Hillary Rodham, Mrs. Bill Clinton, Hillary Rodham Clinton and now Hillary Clinton. She reached out to many potential spiritual mentors during her White House days, including New Age guru Marianne Williamson and the liberal rabbi Michael Lerner. But it was the Family association that stuck.

Sharlet generously attributes Clinton’s involvement to the under-appreciated depth of her religiosity, but he himself struggles to define The Family’s theological underpinnings. The Family avoids the word Christian but worships Jesus, though not the Jesus who promised the earth to the “meek.” They believe that, in mass societies, it’s only the elites who matter, the political leaders who can build God’s “dominion” on earth. Insofar as The Family has a consistent philosophy, it’s all about power–cultivating it, building it and networking it together into ever-stronger units, or “cells.” “We work with power where we can,” Doug Coe has said, and “build new power where we can’t.”

Obama has given a beautiful speech on race and his affiliation with the Trinity United Church of Christ. Now it’s up to Clinton to explain–or, better yet, renounce–her long-standing connection with the fascist-leaning Family.

If Procanick had accepted responsibility from the beginning instead of straying from the truth, Dwyer said, Procanick would likely have faced a lesser punishment and possibly avoided jail time.

“The truth would have set you free,” Dwyer said. “You had a chance to be a man and say, 'I made a mistake.' But as always, the cover-up is much worse than the original crime.”

Procanick's defense attorney, George Aney, noted that Procanick still received a sentence less than the maximum, which was up to seven years in prison.

“It's considerably less than the maximum, but considerably more than he deserved,” Aney said.

Aney also took issue with how Dwyer and the victim's mother used harsh language to attack Procanick's Christian values.

“You are just an evil man,” the victim's mother said Friday in court. “You lied, and you had your wife lie. And all these people who showed up in court to support you, did you lie to them, too?”

The Observer-Dispatch does not identify sex-abuse victims and their families.
The victim's mother said her daughter is still waking up scared at night because of what happened, and she continues to see a therapist. The young girl also feels that everybody is mad at her, the mother said.

Assistant District Attorney Doug DeMarche Jr. then read a note written by the girl, who did not appear in court Friday.

“Bill made me sad and scared,” DeMarche read. “I thought I did something wrong, because I trusted him.”

Dwyer gave Procanick an opportunity to speak in court, but Procanick had nothing to say to the victim and her family.

Aney did not plan to speak in court, he told Dwyer, but he felt obligated to respond to what the victim's mother said about Procanick and his wife.

“I believe she shows her own lack of Christianity by referring to people as liars,” Aney said.

After the sentencing, Aney further commented about what was said in court.

“I respect Judge Dwyer for what he said this morning, but I have to say I disagreed with him,” Aney said. “I have every right to express my feelings, and my feelings are that we are not permitted to call anybody a liar. That's a judgment someone higher than I makes.”

DeMarche, however, said he can understand why the girl's mother spoke of Procanick in such harsh terms.

“She had a lot of faith and trust in Mr. Procanick, and he violated that trust,” DeMarche said. “I think she's justified in being angry.”
