Fight AIDS: Support Red

(Akinyi wants everyone to support the “Product Red campaign to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa).

In support of “Product Red the campaign to raise resources to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa, a New York-based group is organizing a celebration after the Marathon next month.

The celebration party will be held from 5PM to midnight, Sunday, November 5, 2006, at Papillon Bistro & Bar located at 22 East 54 Street, between 5th and Madison Avenues, (212) 754-9006, says one of the organizers, Vivian Akinyi.

“Product Red, was launched by the musician Bono in partnership with American Express, Gap, Converse and Giorgio Armani. The products include shoes, T-shirts, sunglasses and a credit card. When people buy these products, profits will support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, malaria and TB. About 6,500 Africans die everyday from HIV/Aids while it is estimated about 9,000 more are infected.

Akinyi, founder of Sherekea, an organization promoting African dance, culture, cuisine and life, was inspired to host her event after she saw Bono on Oprah Winfrey’s show, promoting the campaign. She scored a sponsor for the party and now wants people to attend the party, with no cover charge to get in, while supporting the Product Red campaign, by purchasing items from the companies involved in Bono’s initiative. “The only thing we ask for is that people support this campaign by purchasing the Red Products—T-shirts, phones, sneakers, or anything associated with the campaign. As you know the profits will be donated to fight AIDS in Africa by helping people who can’t afford medication.

Akinyi adds: “Since it takes a village to raise a child we all should give whatever we can in the name of the global village. There will be a live performance by African drummers at the November 5 benefit party and Akinyi promises to demonstrate some of her renowned African dance moves. “Come dressed appropriately—well prepared to move your hips, she warns. Sherekea is a Kiswahili word meaning “celebration.
