Queens Community House’s Pomonok Community Farmers’ Market is excited to open for the 2014 season.

Every Wednesday from July 9th through November 26th from 10:00am to 5:00pm the market will be open for health-conscious shoppers in front of the Pomonok Neighborhood Center, which is located at 67-09 Kissena Boulevard in Flushing, across the street from Queens College’s Main Gate.

La Baraja Farms and Woori Farms, based out of Goshen, New York will be returning with their fresh pro-duce through the season.

Additional fresh produce is being provided by John Bowne High School’s agricul-ture program. The market also features raw local honey, organic fair trade nuts, seeds and dried fruits, as well as a variety of other healthy treats. Amy Tam-Liao, QCH Director of Community Supported Programming said: “We moved to Wednesdays in hopes that more members of the larger community will be able to benefit from the market. Challenges such as street parking restrictions on Fridays were a big complaint that we re-ceived last year and we expect this change to be welcomed.”

“What makes this market special is the relationship between the people: the volunteers, the farmers and the customers. The market serves as a place not only to purchase local, affordable, fresh produce but to com-mune with your neighbors and learn new ways to prepare dishes at the demonstrations,” said Tam-Liao. Cooking demonstrations are scheduled twice a month from July through October.

The use of local farm produce allows the market to keep costs low while supporting small, local businesses. The market accepts cash, EBT/SNAP, Healthbucks, Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and WIC Vegetables and Fruit Checks. The Pomonok Community Farmers’ Market is supported by the New York Community Trust as part of the Community Experience Partnership, Capital One Bank and the Amerigroup Foundation.

Other sponsors include Assemblyman Simanowitz, Councilman Gennaro & Lancman, Gino’s Pizzeria, John Bowne High School Agricultural Program, ONE Flushing, PS 201, Queens Botanical Garden, Queens Library at Pomonok, Queensboro Hill Neighborhood Association, State Senator Toby Stavisky and a number of other community members and leaders.

Queens Community House is a private, non-sectarian, non-profit agency that has served the residents of Queens for almost 40 years. We currently serve approximately 25,000 people. QCH’s 23 sites serve as centers for community gathering, organizing, and social service activity, while working to promote inter-generational and cross-cultural cooperation and exchange. The Pomonok Center caters to the over 2,000 low and moder-ate-income families living in the development. The Pomonok Houses, a large public housing development, is located in a “food desert.”

Many people, particularly seniors in the community have trouble accessing healthy foods and produce.
