At the end of the day it was her willingness to pander to racist fears and xenophobia that doomed Hillary Clinton's prospects to become the Vice Presidential nominee.
Clinton risked polarizing the entire nation, fueling hatred between Blacks and Whites by insinuating that Barack Obama was un-American, unpatriotic, and possibly a closet Muslim; she drew the
contrast sharply when she asserted that her main supporters were "White Americans," "hard working White Americans." What remained unsaid was that they were "hard working White Americans," as opposed to "those welfare dependant Blacks."
How stupid did Clinton think Black people and White people were? How did she think she would get away with it?
To be sure, many of her supporters backed Clinton because of her long political career and her pro-health care proposals. Yet there are many who also fell in line because of her inflammatory remarks.
Now it's up to Clinton to campaign vigorously and aggressively to get these voters back into the fold to back Obama. Her task begins next week when she addresses delegates and supporters at the Democratic Party's Convention.
