The vernacular resilience of minority business owners in New
York has undoubtedly been tested by the economic shift. Still, it is a proven fact that President Obama's policies have improved the economy. In January,
2009, nearly 600,000 people lost their jobs. But in November, that number
shrank to 11,000.
Still,
the President noted in a recent address to the Brookings Institute that, “There
are more than 7,000,000 fewer Americans with jobs today than when this
recession began,” depicting it "a continuing human tragedy." The
President also stated that the “. . . real roots to recovery are through jobs
creation programs and tax breaks for small businesses."
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (Recovery
Act) was signed into law by President Obama on February 17, 2009 to address a
crisis that is unlike any other since the Great Depression. The ARRA was established in part, to
give our economy a boost and create or save millions of jobs.
On December 11th, in an effort
match minority owned businesses with Government contracts, endeavoring to
create more jobs for New Yorkers who will become employed by these Government
contracted businesses, Congressman Ed Towns, (NY-10) Chairman of the Committee
On Oversight & Government Reform, in collaboration with the Department of
Transportation United States of America, Northeast Small Business
Transportation Center, New York City College of Technology, CUNY, Carver Federal
Savings Bank and the NYS Small Business Development Center, are presenting a
half day, 3-part workshop that will provide information and answer questions
about government contract procurement, while seeking seasoned minority business
owners to take on government contracts.
This free half-day workshop
entitled, “Matching You with Government Contracting Opportunities,” will occur
Friday December 11, 2009 from
8:30AM until 1:00 pm at NYC College of Technology, located at 300 Jay
Street (Between Johnson & Tillary Streets), Brooklyn, NY 11201 US in the
Atrium Auditorium.
In answer to House Minority Leader, John Boehner,
who finds the President’s policies, “repulsive,” how does he find the fact that President Obama did make good
on his promise and has turned the economy around within his first year in
office?
