She will perform the works of Handel, Verdi, Delibes and others during the September 18th concert which starts at 8:00 p.m.
The black tie event marks Boyd’s third consecutive engagement at the Museum. The concert will also feature mezzo-soprano Cheron Cowan and harpist Rashida Black. Deputy Borough President Yvonne J. Graham will be the Honorary Chair of the event.
A Brooklyn native and cum laude graduate of Harvard University, Boyd’s vocal talents and unique instrument have been hailed by many opera professionals as the future of the "great voices" of our time. She “possesses a beautiful coloratura which she uses with great intelligence,? writes one conductor.
Boyd fell in love with opera at a very early age. “As a youngster I was always musical,? Boyd recalled, in an interview with The Black Star. “I played piano for 12 years and wrote compositions for piano, viola and voice as a child. I also participated in chorus at school and would always watch opera on PBS -something about the grandeur of the art form attracted me.?
She added, “When I was 15, I saw Kathleen Battle in concert at Carnegie Hall and decided that I wanted to pursue a career as a classical singer; I have been studying the art form ever since.?
The daughter of a Jamaican mother and American father who reside in Crown Heights, Boyd was one of 20 young artists featured this past April and May in the 14th season of the Natchez Festival of Music in Natchez, Mississippi. Upcoming engagements include her debut appearance with the Manchester String Quartet, which is comprised of string players from the National Symphony Orchestra.
Boyd has been featured in vocal recitals at numerous concert venues in Washington DC and New York. In addition, she has widely shared her vocal talents with the Brooklyn community, performing at fundraisers and events for Marty Markowitz and the Weeksville Historical Society.
Most recently, Boyd was a finalist in the Urban Philharmonic's Paul Robeson Vocal Competition and a semi-finalist in the 12th Annual Friedrich Schorr Memorial Vocal Competition sponsored by the Hat City Music Theater.
