The woman who called 911 never mentioned race. Crowley lied in his police report. I have covered police for years. As we now understand and have heard the tapes where nobody indicated that the potential intruders were Black! Gates was disruptive as verified by both a Black and Hispanic cop. Not that it really matters what race they are but apparently thats all that matters here.

What about Gates' conduct, as a HARVARD PROFESSOR, teaching our young adults that it is OK to behave in the mannor he did, when the officer was there to protect GATES' property. If you want to know what really happened, demand that the tapes of the event be released! I am sure Professor Gates would be very embarrased by his behavior.

Sometimes the truth is the best help in understanding our problems. Your problems are min, even though I am white. We should ease the tensions and speak the truth.

Editor's Note: The truth can set us all free. Maria, I don't know where you live but please go speak candidly with Black folk...of all social classes and ask them about their experience with the police. The problem is that in this country we can't handle the truth. The truth, it seems, is that while Prof. Gates may have behaved like a cad in mentioning Officer Crowley's "mama," that was no reason to arrest him and detain him for four hours. That was clearly abuse of power.

Comment: It is difficult for any person to comment on this case without knowing all the facts. Obama took the approach: Ready, Fire Aim.
We do know that a neighbor called to report a break-in; I would thank my neighbor for looking out for my property. I would thank the police for caring. I would obey the Police's request for positve ID if directed to provide such.
I would not immediately engage in ...playing the race card .... and insulting the policeman's mother.

Editor's Note: You don't know all the fact and yet you're commenting too no? The fact is police officers aren't supposed to arrest you for insulting their mama, wrong as it may be. That's abuse of power....assuming Sgt. Crowley hated his mother, would he still have arrested Prof. Gates?

Comment: The handcuffs were shown to Dr. Gates as a second warning because he refused to heed the first warning. It has been my experience that most police officers treat you with the same respect and level of behavior that you show them. If Dr. Gates had not been yelling and screaming at the officers it is doubtful that any handcuffs would have been shown to him.

Editor's Note: Once we allow police officers to start arresting citizens for "yelling and screaming" as you say, we are on a rapid path towards tyranny. They are law enforcement officers; not laws unto themselves. Sgt. Crowley goofed big time.

Comment: It is evident that police officers have forgotten that they are employed to SERVE AND PROTECT US'. I also had a similar incident with the Hamilton Police in ONTARIO Canada. The two officers who answered my front door tried to bully me into doing their bidding. When I refused because they were acting stupidly they charged me with theft of a ball which some bigoted neighbours had thrown over my fence. The charge was thrown out and I sued the bastards. So the US is not unique....
