[Black Star News Editorial]

There is enough weaponry in Libya to set the country aflame. For the United States to supply any more weapons to Libya, through rebellious soldiers, as proposed by Senator Joe Lieberman (Democrat, CT,) is like pouring fuel into fire.

It's a very foolish and reckless suggestion from a senator who obviously has no concern about seeing more Libyan bloodshed. Why is Lieberman even making such a call? What could be behind his depraved suggestion? Personal animus towards Muammar Gaddafi would blind him that he can't see the deadly consequences?

Libya is already practically partitioned and there is possibility of a full-blown civil war. Officers have defected from Gaddafi's army as have some ministers and diplomats posted abroad. With clan allegiances playing an important role in Libya, weapons infusion, with ongoing bloodshed, could promote total anarchy in the country, resulting in Somalia-type war lordism.

Is Lieberman, who is retiring from the Senate, a front for some oil company seeking a new deal with the rebels? Indeed, Lieberman has been calling for the rebels in Benghazi to set up a "provisional government," which would presumably be recognized by the United States, maybe at Lieberman's urging, and begin negotiations with Western oil companies?

What if the United States did arm the rebellious soldiers and officers and the bloodshed escalated as a result with more innocent civilians being victimized? Wouldn't this obligate the United States to send in U.S. military personnel?

We should remember the lessons of Iraq where the U.S. authorities were told Americans would be greeted with flowers.

A Libyan who was interviewed on CNN put it best last week. He said Libyans don't want the U.S. to do on their behalf what the U.S. did for Iraq.  Let the Libyans determine their dispensation.
