Could you use seed money to launch your new business?

With unemployment on the rise, New Yorkers from Wall Street to Main Street are taking the plunge and starting their own small businesses in an effort to regain control of their lives and finances.

At a time when creditors are hesitant to lend, enter Brooklyn Public Library’s sixth annual “PowerUP! Your Business Starts Here” Business Plan Competition; the program celebrates and rewards the entrepreneurial spirit and enhances the vitality of the local business community.

Last year’s competition saw the most applicants ever: 461 participants representing 378 different business ideas and 75 submitted final plans, and we anticipate even more applicants as a result of the struggling economy and growing desire for workers to forge a personalized career path.  This year’s grand prize winner will receive $15,000, with two second place winners both receiving $5,000.  All applicants must attend one orientation session, along with a series of business classes offered throughout 2009.

Last year’s top prize winner was Amanda Jones who opened a confectionary company called Brooklyn Fudge, with the $15,000 award;
Nzinga Knight, launched Nzinga Knight International, making clothing for Muslim women, with her $5,000; and, Elissa Olin opening Green in BKLYN, an all-green store.

Who can enter?: If you are 18 years of age or older, live in Brooklyn, are a legal resident or US citizen, and wish to start a business in Brooklyn, you are eligible. “PowerUP!” is a competition to help applicants start a business.

What is the prize?: Three winners will receive cash awards for entering the best business plan to start a business in Brooklyn. Cash prizes of $15,000 for first place and $5,000 for two runners‐up will be awarded.

What do I have to do to participate?: You must get a Brooklyn Public Library Card and attend a few classes at the Brooklyn Business Library, 280 Cadman Plaza West, Brooklyn, NY, 718‐623‐7000.

How can I apply?: All applicants must attend one orientation. The orientation will give you all the details about applying to PowerUP! Following is a list of orientation dates at BPL’s Business Library unless otherwise noted:
