Sphinx focuses on providing professional opportunities for young Black and Latino artists…

Coinciding with the milestone 10th Anniversary of The Sphinx Organization (Sphinx 10!), JPMorgan Chase has committed one million dollars over four years providing lead corporate support to of the Sphinx Carnegie Hall Series and Presenter of the Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players.

The Carnegie Gala Concert will be held on October 24th, 2006, at the Stern Auditorium.  The concert will feature the Sphinx Chamber Orchestra comprised of top alumni competition winners, as well as the debut of the Sphinx Harlem Quartet and top Laureates performing as soloists all under the direction of Maestro Anthony Elliott

The Inaugural Gala Concert in 2004 was described by The New York Times as “…first rate in every way…polished, nuanced, rich in tone and thoughtfully shaped.� Inspired by Sphinx’s artistic mission, the concert program will offer standard repertoire along with masterpieces by Black and Latino composers. 

Sphinx’s Founding President, Aaron Dworkin stated “The significance and value of the Carnegie Series is immeasurable as it represents not only the incredible performance opportunity for young musicians, but also, a strong impact on diverse audiences by exposing them to the highest level of artistry reflected within communities of color.� 

The Sphinx Organization is the national non-profit arts and youth development organization committed to building diversity in classical music through year-round educational programming and arts presentation.  Founded by MacArthur Fellow Aaron P. Dworkin,  Sphinx has four main programming areas: Artist Development which focuses on providing professional opportunities for young artists and encompasses the annual Sphinx Competition for young Black and Latino string players, the Sphinx Symphony, Sphinx Chamber Orchestra, as well as three main scholarship initiatives; the Sphinx Performance Academy (SPA) at Walnut Hill School which offers intensive summer training to aspiring Black and Latino musicians ages 12-17; Classical Connections which helps teachers implement music education in schools nationwide; and the Sphinx Preparatory Music Institute at Wayne State University which provides Detroit area youths with yearlong classes in performance, music theory/ear training and music history.
