Police units canvas active crime scene where cop fatally shot robbery suspect

An off-duty police officer fatally shot one of two men who tried to rob him when he showed up to buy a car posted on a Craigslist’s ad. The incident unfolded Monday night around 10:30p.m. on 145th Avenue near 177th Place when the officer, who was not immediately identified, was met at gunpoint after arriving at the location.

Police recovered a black Blowback air pistol pellet gun at the scene, which they believed was used by one of the suspects in the robbery attempt.

The off-duty officer managed to fire off several rounds from his service weapon during the encounter, wounding one of the men involved. That man, who was later identified as Devon Holder, 30, from the Canarsie section of Brooklyn, was taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

The second man fled the scene in a white BMW, according to the police.

The off-duty cop was taken to Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park for treatment, but suffered no injuries, police said.

The NYPD Police said the investigation is continuing and that the second suspect remained at-large Tuesday.
