Adem Bunkeddeko, Democrat running for Congress in Brooklyn’s 9th District, has condemned President Donald Trump’s announcement that he will be suspending immigration.

Earlier this month, Bunkeddeko urged for DACA recipients to be granted immediate citizenship and for an expedited citizenship process for all immigrants.

I am absolutely disgusted by Trump’s plan to suspend immigration. Make no mistake — after failing to prepare for the pandemic, after misleading the nation, after encouraging dangerous behavior and after minimizing the crisis, this President is now desperate to deflect from his own incompetence,” Bunkeddeko said. “He is pandering to a racist base while continuing to fail to address the pandemic, putting lives in danger. As our next Congressmember, I will demand a full investigation into the multiple failures of the Trump administration that made this crisis so much worse, and why our federal government was steered to follow the recommendations of Fox News pundits and conspiracy theorists instead of scientists and public health experts.”

Bunkeddeko added, “My parents are immigrant refugees who fled the Ugandan civil war to come to this country — my mom is now an essential worker as a home health aide for the developmentally disabled. Our immigrant friends, family members, and neighbors are vital to our battle against the disease — they’re on the frontlines, working in hospitals, grocery stores, and restaurants. It is shameful that the president is attacking the millions of people who are sacrificing so much for the greater good.”

Bunkeddeko is an organizer and advocate in Central Brooklyn running for Congress in NY-9. He previously challenged incumbent Yvette Clarke in 2018, losing by less than two thousand votes.
