Brother Monroe Brown, Owner of True South Book Store Needs Support After Brain Aneurysm
Monroe Brown, owner of True South Book Store, suffered a brain aneurysm on Sunday, July 21 and his bookstore needs support as he fights to recover his health.
True South has been called a mini-Black cultural institution and is known for hosting numerous lectures and community events in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area. The inventory of books concentrate on Black history and culture. On Wednesday, July 25, 2013, his son, Umoja Marron, hosted a potluck-fundraiser to help pay for Mr. Brown’s rapidly escalating hospital bills.
As a testament to his popularity, there were as many people outside the store as in, and a long line of supporters waiting to pay for books, posters and other items. The Bookstore is located at: 492 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, N.Y., 11216. (347) 425-7330
In a message to supporters, Assatte Brown, Monroe’s daughter who lives in Florida and has visited him in the hospital, said that her father is in "critical but stable condition" and that "doctors have optimistic prognosis for his recovery and hoping they can get him to rehab in six weeks."
He is hooked up to monitors, but breathing on his own, she reports. Assatte encourages visits. Monroe Brown is at Bellevue Hospital, 462 1st Avenue, 10th Floor, Room 10554. Telephone 212-263-5800. Take the 6 train to 28th Street.
