New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York Attorney General Letitia James have both denounced President Donald Trump’s ongoing attempts to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census.

“Despite the Supreme Court’s decision to block the inclusion of a citizen question on the U.S. census, President Trump will not drop his bid to include this discriminatory question that would jeopardize the accuracy and legitimacy of census data,” said Cuomo. “To issue an executive order, which would likely be similarly struck down, or print an addendum would be a gross misuse of executive power, and President Trump must stop using the census as a political pawn in his anti-immigrant agenda. Shame on you, Mr. President, for continuing to put the interests of those in power in Washington over the well-being of your citizens. In New York, we will do everything in our power to ensure every New Yorker is counted.”

“We will not sit idly by and allow the President to subvert the law,” said James. “As we celebrate Independence Day, all of us, including the President, should be reminded that we live in a democracy, not a dictatorship, and must follow the law, even if we disagree with it. We will continue to move forward and make sure everyone is counted in the 2020 census.”
