New York City’s immigrant healthcare workers who are on the frontline of the battle against COVID-19 will be celebrated today in Inwood.

Today, Monday, April 27th, starting at 11:45 AM, immigrant doctors will fly flags at half-mast and sing “America the Beautiful” in the center of New York’s Latino community, hard-hit Inwood, to commemorate doctors, healthcare workers, first responders and community members who have lost their lives in the fight against COVID-19.

In the absence of leadership and compassion from the White House, SOMOS, a network of over 2,500 immigrant doctors serving about 750,000 immigrant patients in New York is stepping up to honor those who have passed – including several members of the SOMOS physician network. These doctors are also running five trilingual testing sites and are giving away about 10,000 meals per day at over a dozen distribution sites.

Today’s ceremony will take place at the daily food distribution at Inwood’s La Nueva España Restaurant in New York City at 606 W 207th St. SOMOS, in partnership with José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and Marc Anthony’s Maestro Cares Foundation, has distributed thousands of meals a day starting during Holy Week to the predominantly Latino Inwood community grappling with quarantines, illnesses, the loss of jobs and reduced hours at work.

Today, in additional to nutritious meals, SOMOS will also distribute American flags to families so they can commemorate loved ones who have lost their lives to coronavirus by flying the flag in their windows.
