[Community Announcement]

El Puente is pleased to invite civic leaders, community members of all ages, supporters, and partners from Los Sures (Southside of Williamsburg) to a Community Painting Day on Friday, July 18th from 2 – 4pm to collaborate in completing a 200-foot long mural along a construction fence at the Domino Sugar Factory site in Williamsburg.

The mural is being designed and painted by Los Muralistas de El Puente, an inter-generational public art collective developed within El Puente and serving the community of Los Sures since 1990. The group engages youth and community members in intensive training, coaching and mentoring in the arts and the tradition of mural painting; four artists from El Puente’s adult artist collective CADRE (Community Artists’ Development & Resource Exchange) and twelve youth artists from the El Puente Academy and El Puente Williamsburg Leadership Center are involved in this project.

With the working title of Past Present Prediction, this dynamic mural depicts the neighborhood’s rich history and Latino cultural values, specifically addressing the significance of the Domino Sugar Factory’s presence in the neighborhood and the historic impact of the sugar trade on the Los Sures community. Commissioned by Two Trees Management Company, which is revitalizing and redeveloping the Domino site, this public art project reflects the transformation of the neighborhood and the deep roots and resiliency of its long-time residents.

In addition to the opportunity to help paint the mural, community members can share comments, ideas, and neighborhood memories on with El Puente (@elpuentepalante) social media using the hashtag #pastpresentpredict.
