[NYC Mayoral Race 2013]

Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio whose message of narrowing the wealth gap has helped him open a 41-point lead according to a Quinnipiac University poll over Joe Lhota the Republican candidate, has been endorsed by Senator Charles E. Schumer.

Other polls show de Blasio with an even wider margin over Lhota, the Giuiliani protege.

"Bill de Blasio will be a progressive mayor with an economic growth agenda that will lift all boats," Senator Schumer said. "New York needs big, bold ideas to meet the challenges before us, and a laser focus on making sure the economic pie is shared more equitably with all New Yorkers. Bill de Blasio is the leader to achieve these goals, and I will do all I can to help make these objectives become reality."

“I'm honored to receive the support of Senator Schumer, a fellow Brooklynite who has spent his career in public service fighting for New York and finding common-sense solutions to our nation's most pressing needs," de Blasio said. "At a time when working New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet, Senator Schumer has never forgotten that a strong and vibrant economy is based on a growing middle class. I'm proud to stand with him."

Separately, a Wall Street Journal/WNBC and Marist College poll found de Blasio with an even larger lead, 43 points, over Lhota.

The Quinnipiac poll found strong support for Mr. de Blasio among men and women, and across every income, education and age group. Ninety percent of black voters supported him, as did 68 percent of Hispanic voters and 52 percent of white voters.
