Eyes on the Prize, When the Levees Broke, I’ll Make Me A World, Malcolm X: Make It Plain, Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock, Soul Food Junkies.

Meet some of the visionaries behind these great films and see the work of talented emerging women filmmakers of color at the Reel Sisters of the Diaspora Film Festival at Brooklyn’s Kumble Theater this weekend.

City Council members  Jumaane Williams, Letitia James and newly announced Council candidate Laurie Cumbo will salute honorees and filmmakers on Sunday, October 14th  at the 15th Annual Reel Sisters Film Festival awards ceremony hosted by Terrie Williams at the Kumble Theater, LIU Brooklyn.

This year’s honorees are indie film veterans Michelle Materre, Tim and Daphne Reid and Winsome Sinclair and the awards lineup features entertainment by gifted vocalist/composer Imani Uzuri, youth poetry troupe Swag and steel-band sensation CASYM.

The ceremony caps this weekend’s screenings of narratives, docs, features and shorts, an editing workshop with Sam Pollard (When the Levees Broke), chat with Daphne Maxwell Reid (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air) and Alece Oxendine (Rooftop Films) a tribute to Blackside Inc. (Eyes on The Prize) and the Brooklyn premier of Soul Food Junkies.

Mabel Haddock of the Firelight Media Producer’s Lab (and co-founder of the National Black Programming Consortium), addressed filmmakers at an opening reception last night with an honest, but inspiring assessment of the current playing field for independent  filmmakers.

The Festival opens today with a Film Resource Workshop and screenings begin at 2:00.
