Charles Tolliver’s Big Band Hits Brooklyn in Benefit Concert for Sistas’ Place

Tolliver and his sixteen piece Big Band will be performing for the first time in Brooklyn at this extraordinary benefit for Sistas’ Place.

Charles Tolliver’s Big Band will perform a Benefit Concert for Sistas’ Place on Friday, August 17, 2012. Benefit to be held at the Jazz @966, 966 Fulton Street in Brooklyn.  WBGO jazz radio personality Rob Crocker will be the Master of Ceremony at this tremendous Brooklyn debut performance.

Opened in 1995, Sistas’ Place coffee house has become a cultural institution in Bedford Stuyvesant. A collective of women decided to bring classic modern jazz back to our community.

Phenomenal jazz musicians have performed there over the years. “Charles Tolliver is a truly great innovative artist, one of Diz’s (Gillespie) freshest and most skilled progeny in all aspects, compositionally, orchestration, and conducting,” to quote poet and author Amiri Baraka.

Tolliver and his sixteen piece Big Band will be performing for the first time in Brooklyn at this extraordinary benefit for Sistas’ Place.

The concert will feature Tolliver’s recreation of the music of John Coltrane’s Africa Brass. Big Band Rhythm section includes George Cables, Devin Starks and E.J. Strickland. Saxophones include Bill Saxton, Marcus Strickland, Howard Johnson, Bruce Williams, and Todd Bradshore. Trumpets include Chris Albert, Freddie Hendrix, and Bruce Weiss. Trombones include Jason Jackson, Michael Dease, Stafford Hunter, and Aaron Johnson.
