[Elections 2008: W. Virginia Votes]
Senator Hillary Clinton today won big in West Virginia, the state she was expected to win.
The outcome is considered a pyrrhic victory and does nothing to impact Senator Barack Obama’s overwhelming lead in the total delegates count.
Clinton was gracious in her remarks, saying she had “respect” for Senator Obama. Last week, after her overwhelming 14 points defeat in North Carolina by Senator Obama, she had once again played up the race card by appealing to “hard-working white Americans.”
She was widely repudiated by almost every major media organization and Congressman Charlie Rangel, her primary Black supporter called the remarks one of the “dumbest” things she had ever said.
Clinton was winning W. Virginia by more than 24 points; she will gain more delegates that Obama from the 28 total at stake, roughly 19 to nine.
Senator Obama is the prospective nominee. He leads with a total of 1, 877 delegates to Clinton’s 1,712. The candidate that wins 2,025 delegates first becomes the Party's nominee; there are only five contests left and Obama only needs 148 more delegates.
Clinton has come to the realization that her window of opportunity has closed and even though she vowed to campaign hard in the remaining contests she also said “I will work my heart out for the Democratic” candidate.
Obama surpassed Clinton in the superdelegates count last week after his overwhelming North Carolina victory. He was already leading Clinton in the pledged delegates count.
In the last month more than 26 superdelegates have endorsed Obama. Three Clinton supporters, including Congressman Donald Payne, last week switched their endorsement from Clinton to Obama.
