Senator Barack Obama won the Wisconsin primary by more than 15% points tonight, virtually dooming Senator Hillary Clinton’s chances for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.

This means Obama gets several more delegates relative to senator Clinton; he already leads by 138 pledged (elected) delegates. Before tonight’s vote, Obama had 1,141 pledged delegates compared to Clinton’s 1,0003.

Obama’s performance, winning the last nine contests, is a stunning achievement. He has brushed aside the powerful Clinton machinery that includes her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

Obama has energized the electorate, pulling in millions of new voters, including the young. Obama now also enjoys substantial support from white voters: When the contest started in January, he only won 38% of the white male vote; tonight, 62% of white male voters backed Obama.

Exit polling also revealed other major shifts favoring Obama. Clinton had been previously lifted by White women’s votes: Obama sliced that base away and Clinton narrowly won that group 52% to 47%.

Returns from Hawaii, where 20 delegates are at stake were not yet available this evening.
