New York City Councilman Charles Barron and Assemblywoman Inez Barron, joined by Santos Crespo, President of Local 372, union members, elected officials and leading educators will be holding a press conference at 12 noon, on the steps of the Department of Education Headquarters, Tweed Courthouse –52 Chambers Street, New York, NY 10007– to denounce the biased and unnecessary layoffs of up to 800 public school staffmembers.

At a time when the New York City public school system continues to fail in educating New York City school children, especially in neighborhoods of color, the layoffs of critical public school staff will not only hurt our children’ s education but will add to the mounting economic crisis that has hit the city’s poorest communities hardest.

Councilman Barron will point out how Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s office could have avoided these cuts as well as indict the Mayor’s Office for its continued pattern of discrimination against low income neighborhoods of color.
