[Race For NYC Controller]

New York Controller candidate John Liu is flanked by Rev. Herbert Daughtry on his right side and New York City Councilman Charles Barron on his left at the International African Arts Festival on July 3, 2009, in downtown Brooklyn.

Liu was endorsed by both Rev. Daughtry and Councilman Barron. Daughtry and Barron are nationally-recognized civil rights leaders and are stalwart advocates for middle-class families and communities of color in New York.

In 2001, Liu became the first Asian-American elected to legislative office in New York history when he became a member of the New York City Council, representing the Northeast Queens communities of Auburndale, Linden Hill, Fresh Meadows, Flushing, Queensborough Hills and Whitestone.
