Medicine For Mind/Body

Integrative medicine may be the best route for preventative medicine by offering everything from IV vitamin therapy and acupuncture to more traditional internal medicine and physiatry—this center does just that. It tackles health before there are health problems, and actual health problems are approached differently. This is important, particularly for the African American community where diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity and its associated heart disease are becoming epidemic

Mind Body New York recently celebrated the opening of its impressive 16,000 foot facility on Park Avenue and marked the fruition of a dream for its founder and Medical Director, Raphael Kellman, MD. “I wanted to create a place that offers life, Kellman said. That he did and then some. Mind Body is a wellness facility that focuses on integrative medicine, which combines conventional and complementary healing therapies all under one roof.

The facility practitioners, including Kellman work under the belief that everything in terms of healthcare is interconnected—mind, body, environment and lifestyle. “The best modality of treatment for many health ailments is improvement of cellular function, if you can improve the cells’ function,â€? he added.  Dr. Kellman, who completed his post-graduate training in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, Lenox Hill Hospital and St. John’s Hospital, is right.

For example, it’s well-known medical fact that prior to a person being officially diagnosed with Diabetes, this person will have high levels of insulin, a substance that is produced in response to glucose, in his/her system, which indicates that either their cells are not responding to insulin or that their glucose level is getting to high. Dr. Kellman, along with an increasing number of traditionally-trained physicians believes that this state provides a window of opportunity to reverse the cellular function that will eventually lead to diabetes.

The opening of Mind Body symbolizes that the public demand for facilities that utilize integrative medicine is growing. The once ignored and perhaps slightly ridiculed field is now being embraced by various traditional and well-known medical centers including Duke, Harvard and the Cleveland Clinic. Mind Body itself looks more like a well-though out, posh spa rather than a medical facility with its own site lab testing –urine samples are transported directly from the bathroom to the lab, so that the patient doesn’t have to do the urine walk of shame to the lab, which is brilliant—yoga studio, infrared saunas and vitamin store. It offers over 30 state-of-the art consultation and treatment rooms.

Kellman has employed board-certified physicians along with experienced physical therapists, acupuncturists (a facial acupuncture is a must), and massage therapists, all in an effort to aid people in making the lifestyle changes necessary for optimal health. The facility accepts many healthcare plans and referral services.

Mind Body is located at 305 Park Avenue enter on 23rd Street, 6th Floor, 212-777-6269.
