In what could be his last fight, in perhaps the premier showplace in all of sports, Manny Pacquiao brought down the house with a performance befitting a star.

On the star at Cowboys Stadium.

The Philippine sensation, who captured a seat in his country’s national congress in May, beat Antonio Margarito in similar fashion Saturday – by a landslide – to win the vacant WBC super welterweight title.

He pounded the Mexican slugger from the opening bell, claiming a unanimous decision in front of a crowd of 41,734. It was Pacquiao’s record eight title in eight different weight classes. But at least Margarito made him earn it. In March, Pacquiao pummeled a shockingly passive Joshua Clottey here over 12 one-sided rounds.

There were no knockdowns. Both fighters started slow, but Pacquiao slowly began to find the range by countering up the middle. In round two, Margarito stayed covered up but began using his superior height and reach by landing his jab and straight rights.

Pacquiao connected with a stinging flurry in the third that sliced through Margarito’s guard and excited the crowd. In the fifth, Pacquiao opened a cut under Margarito’s right eye and poured it on. But Margarito survived the round.  Margarito scored with a brief flurry in the fifth, but Pacquiao maintained control.

But Margarito, right eye closed, kept coming forward. He appeared to hurt Pacquiao with a series of body shots in the sixth, nearly bringing Pacman to his knees. Pacquiao regained control in the seventh, even doing a little of the Ali shuffle. But Margarito rallied at the end of the round.
Margarito pinned Pacauiao on the ropes in the eighth and scored with combinations. But it only seemed to anger Pacquiao, who responded with a barrage of punches.

Pacquiao landed a big left in the ninth. Margarita countered well on a couple of occasions. Pacquiao continued his domination but couldn’t finished Margarito, who finished the fight with his face a bloody mess and both eyes nearly closed.
